It's unfortunately not that simple.
(1) At what speed would you hit the rev limiter in each gear with each
axle ratio? Would the 3.9 necessitate enough shifts to third (and
back down to second) that it's not worth it?
(2) How close together are first and second compared with second and
third? If first and second are far apart but second and third are
close together, then the shorter axle ratio becomes more interesting
(and vice versa).
