Thanks Rich. I just wanted to set a few things straight and keep the
focus on what was truly important. Boy, this sure has been a couple
of lousy weeks for us sports fans. Some great people died, and with
EgyptAir, a lot of regular folks died. No single death was more
significant than the others as they are all sad occurrences. In some
way we've all lost something or someone that had meaning to us.
Yesterday, the Moore family said goodbye to their son in a private
ceremony. The attendees comprised a who's who of the motorsport
world; Montoya, Zanardi, Villeneuve were all in attendance along with
most of Greg's best CART buddies like Dario, Jimmy, and Max. The only
comments made to the press were from CART Pres., Andrew Craig and
Vancouver Indy CEO, Stuart Ballantyne. The media respected everyone's
right not to be hounded by reporters at this time to preserve the
dignity of the event.
Today, a friend and I went to the public memorial in Greg's hometown.
I don't consider myself a fan in the true sense of the word. I don't
collect autographs and memorabilia but I do have Greg's since he was
the local boy. However, as a racer, it just seemed like the right
thing to do to say a final "goodbye and thank you" to a fellow speed
freak. A bit of closure and healing. Today was not a funeral, but
celebration. Greg Moore lived the way he drove - at the limits.
How will I remember Greg? I'll remember him every time I'm testing
the limits of my car as well as myself -with my foot to the floor and
competing like hell to win. I'll remember him whenever someone new
comes to autocross and I try to make the experience as enjoyable as
possible. I'll remember him whenever I give of my time to better the
sport and the community.
I know that the CART/Fedex champion wears the #1 on his car every year
and some
other car numbers get swapped, but I hope CART sees fit to retire the
number '99'. I think I'll put a small '99' on the car this year just
for motivation. Just like I'll probably wear Plus-4's in a future golf
outing. Heck, they already laugh at my golf game, so I mighty as well
go all out.
