I used to run 245/45/17 kumho's on 17x6.5" rims (G-Stock talon) at around 48psi, and cannot recall seeing the 'crack' form. I do believe Jason is on track as it being the split between the tread cap and the sidewall. To reduce (or even out) outside shoulder wear, try a little more toe out in front, this will reduce understeer a little. Also flip the tires on the rim once you have about 3/32 left too.
