Great idea! How would you like to inventory this info on every make, model,
and subtype of every car ever made, break all them down into just a few
classes, and tell us what you come up with? :) No flame intended - I agree
with you that this would be the most fair way to handle it. However, the
task of calculating an index number for every car that might possibly
compete is so huge that it's nearly impossible. The BMW CCA has a system
similar to what you propose that was created by the Golden Gate Chapter, and
we use it in the Boston Chapter as well. It gives all BMWs made since the
'60s a base point value based on its stock performance potential. Mods also
have point values that are added to the base. Each class contains a bracket
of point values, so however many points you end up with after your mods
determine who you're competing against. This also eliminates the need to
limit what mods are and aren't legal in a class, since it's all taken care
of by the point system. This works quite well, but I'm sure it was a lot of
work to come up with this system just for BMWs. What you're suggesting
would work great - IF the manpower was invested to come up with a system.
Personally, seeing as how all of us would rather be racing, I don't see it
happening.
