Very useful in the regard that automatic transmissions in racing situations
generate a LOT of heat to the oil. The smaller convertors with the high
stall speeds are slipping, guess what is changing that kinetic
energy into thermal energy? The tansmission oil and it starts to see
dramatic changes in it's fiction characteristics as the temperature
goes past about 220 degrees F. Even synthetics that have
higher temperature resistance can show changes in their friction
coefficients above these temperatures. What happens is you see
more slippage and consequently more heat, the oil breaks down
and loses it's ability to grip, cool and lubricate the parts in the
transmission and Voila......your trans takes a Huge Dump.
Yes, the transmission temperature gauge in a racing automatic
is very useful.
