Actually, Nick started in Finger Lakes Region, when he was a student at
RIT.  I was his instructor at one event (his first?).  He seemed much
like most other novices.  There's no question he picked it up quickly,
and got REAL FAST when he got a real car.

Mark will tell you he didn't come hot on the scene all at once.  I
think he started a year before I did, so I don't remember first hand,
but I remember him telling me he had to work hard at it for a year or
two.  There's no question that he too picked it up fairly quickly, but
I don't think anyone is national champ material at their second event.
