ABS and TC enable the average driver to brake, turn, and accelerate much
faster than they would normally be able to. I think everyone would agree
that, as autocrossers, none of us are average drivers. ;) Many of us would
agree that TC is more of a hinderance than a help in competitive driving,
most often slowing us down when we actually want to be riding on the edge of
traction, or even a little beyond.

ABS is the same way. In a threshold braking exercise I participated in a
couple of months ago, we learned how to modulate the brake to prevent
lockup, just like ABS does. Several cars in my group had ABS, but the
instructors suggested we all try the techniques regardless. So a friend of
mine tried it both ways in his VW Jetta GLX. Stomping on the brake kicked
in the ABS, which worked pretty well. The next run he modulated the brake
himself - and stopped even quicker! The capabilities of ABS are limited.
It's perfectly adequate for the average driver, and a big help on a slippery
road. But it doesn't push traction as close to the edge as it could, and
performance drivers like us want it at or slightly over the edge at times.
Some cars may still benefit from it, and others like my friend's Jetta may
not - YMMV. I'd say do as he did - try it both ways, and use what works for
your car and your driving style.

no ABS, no traction control, no power anything :)
