I've been wondering about prices--about why R tires are so cheap
compared to their high-end street tire brethren. Is it because the
manufacturers cut their profits to sell tires, to win events, to get
that halo effect on their entire line of tires? Or do they jack up the
prices on high-end tires because they know the suckers will pay,
a la SUVs?

Or are the technology and associated development/manufacturing costs
really that different?

Case in point, from tirerack.com:

275/40-17

race tire g-Force R1: $175
street tire g-Force KD: $276

What gives?
