Luckily, the cheap seats ARE close to where I work. My $78,000 house is a
mile and a half from downtown. I walk or take one of the two bus lines that
run a block away. The extension of my garage to 1000 square feet cost
another ten grand. A house as nice as this out in the 'burbs would cost at
least $150,000. And then I'd have to drive in and pay more for parking than
the bus costs. Then maybe I couldn't afford to autocross at all. Horrors!
I realize that those of you in Silicon Valley face different pressures. I
have heard the tales of buying a crappy house in town for $300,000 and then
tearing it down, just to get the lot so you could buid a nice house and not
have to face the commuting traffic.
