I use AutoCAD, I have a base layer that has the site dimensions and fixed
hard points. I then lay out the proposed continuous curved line around the
area and then build the cone structure(s) for the visual effects. Roger
Johnson uses something from his work (Space Station) but does basically the
same thing. Final adjustments should be made at the site, if possible, to
make your final map a true finished product and not just a final draft.
Most designers have trademark elements that they work into their various
designs, "walls of death", "Chicago Boxes" and others that they somehow keep
in mind while doing the curved line process. If you follow Roger's design
manual and graph paper you can get the same results. My brother uses Power
Point, imagine that. This is my second year to work on course design, if
Roger doesn't tire of my help (ha!) I may get the flow down quicker in a
year or two. Roger's opinion may vary ;-)
