Best would be the stock size rim and run in stock class, but it sounds

Yes. That is true. He could pick up a set of 15" stock MR2 rims for
pretty cheap ($250-350). Or he could find the lightest/best rim
regardless of cost. That would depend on what he wants from the setup.
The rims will not be the big factor in his competitiveness.

Stock 15" rims then. Check the mr-2 classifieds (linked from
http://www.mr2.com/ )
Then put some 225 Kumhos all around (use 1/4" thick spacers for the
front if he runs the stock rims). He should pretty happy with the
