Rodney,

Definitely do it before the event.  Mineral oil is pretty broken down
at 5,000 miles, especially in a turbo car.  Also, the filter is likely
to be pretty full of crap, perhaps so much so that the internal bypass
spring will open and pass unfiltered oil through your engine (cheery
thought, what?)

FWIW on a new car or engine I change oil at 150, 600, 1500, and every
3000 miles thereafter.  It's a little extreme but that first change
helps flush out the nasty bits created as the internal parts get run in.
