buying a Miata

Well the engine in my CSP MR2 let go the other day, So I'm looking at
buying a
 94-95 Miata as a daily driver and sometime Auto cross car.  What kind
of things
should I be looking for in the way of VIN codes for packages, and
general wear
and tear items I might need to take a look at.  Also are the tops very
expensive
to replace?
