I'm no expert, but this is how I interpret the rules/clarifications:
The clarification states *fully extended length* can have a tolerance from
stock by +/- 1". This means that the variation of fully extended shock length
can occur fully at the top, or fully at the bottom, or split up between the
top and bottom mounts. As long as the fully extended length meets the +/- 1"
from stock rule you're ok here. My interpretation of *fully extended length*
is the distance between the two fixed mounting points; whether they are eyelet
centerlines, shoulders, etc., , not the *overall* length. Range of travel
cannot be changed, that's self explanatory.
A further clarification states that the bottom spring perch must be no lower
than on the stock piece; this fixes the dimensional relationship between the
bottom shock/strut mounting point and the lower spring perch; which is what
controls ride height relative to the suspension spring. This would *appear*
to make the change in fully extended length occur at the top. However, what
it really amounts to is an allowable variation in the static ride position of
the dampener piston within the dampener body.
Maybe you want the static ride height positon of the dampener piston in the
middle of it's travel range, but *maybe* you want the piston to be positioned
1" higher or 1" lower; that's what the clarification on *fully extended
length* really gives you. If I say anymore than that I'll be giving my
secrets away. Think about it. :-)
BTW, Uncle Howie is gone to the National Convention in San Diego. I'm not
sure when he'll be back.
