Another likely cause is the balance hose that runs between the tops of the tanks. If that has come loose, or has split, the gas smell would be pretty unbearable. It connects straight to the tank on the LHS, and to the rubber extended from the filler cap on the RHS. I had just this problem with my SIII after it had been in the body shop and they left the pipe off.
