Chuck - The tube from the engine to the gauge contains oil. Am guessing that contents may include oil that has been in the tube for 40 years. Maybe it's a little too dense to flow back as the pressure in the engine varies. Would suggest that you try disconnecting the tube at both ends and try clearing it of the old oil. Good luck!
