Hello all,

Just wanted to let everybody know I made it home safely, if quite
tired and sore. 2500 miles in 3 days is not my idea of a good time, especially
with the return trip being in the repaired 1964 Chevy car hauler. (manual
steering and gearbox, heavy suspension, no radio!)

The repair was relatively simple, since it's a heavy truck. Remove the
axles, which can be done with the wheels in place, and remove the differential
carrier. 26 bolts and 4 nuts later, the diff is on the ground. Discovered the
failure was caused by a second gas tank someone had put in (poorly) at some
point. It shifted position and dented the rear axle cover, bringing the cover
into contact with the ring gear. Gear grinds hole in cover, fluid escapes,
pinion gear melts. Not good. Removed 2nd gas tank, fixed cover, put everything
back together, and here I am safe at home and exhausted.

On that note, I'll leave you all with a promise to write down the whole story
of this Commer and it's troubled journey from the UK to Nebraska.
