Jan,
Yes I agree, most OD units are trashed.
Ive helped several friends open up OD units on trannies that
were "known" to be good, or were represented as such, and have found
on every occasion, the planetaries were destroyed, which always happens
when the OD runs out of oil.
To all you out there thinking about going on the cheep with an overdrive,
good luck to you.
When an OD is available from Jeff Howarth in the UK, you
know that it ought to work when you get it home.

Subject: Re: Rootes Overdrive Transmission Value
I really have not seen that many OD transmissions that could be
purchased here in the USA that are ready to bolt in. Most all of them
need some rebuild work. The ones that appear on Ebay, from the UK, ARE
ready-to-run and they are selling for about $1000-$1200 which is a very
good deal. Also, they usually come in a package with relay, wiring,
switch and sometime the correct speedometer. What a deal! Most of the
other stuff on ebay is usually junk. The early non-syncro ALL need
rebuilding, which is almost impractical because parts just don't exist.
If I found an OD unit and transmission, and nobody knows what condition
it's in, then it's just worth the price of a core ($100ea).
