Well the easy way is to sell the car... I am not sure you can seal one of
these up so it does not leak. I have built a few Alpine engines and you can
get them fairly tight but they will leak. the pan is not too bad to seal up.
I use black RTV on the rails and nothing on the cork end gaskets, well a dab
on the corners where they meet the rail gaskets. Have done it both ways on
the rail gaskets, used the paper gaskets with RTV on both sides and no paper
gasket just RTV, either will work. The big key is it has to be clean very
clean as in no oil on the pan or block, any oil there and it will creep on
you and leak. The end gaskets with nothing on them seem to work the best for
me just work them into the grooves, I use a thin putty knife and a screw
drive to push them in. The putty knife I stick in the groove next to the
cork piece and then use the screw driver to work the thing in place. Most of
the cork gaskets are just a touch long and will need to be trimmed. When I
used RTV on the cork gaskets they slide out of place when I tightened the
pan. The places these things leak the worst are the timing chain cover and
the rear "no main seal" then the tappet cover gaskets are a bad joke, toss
them and just use the RTV. Then you can just face the fact that the darn
thing will leak oil... pretty much no matter what you do. Jim E

Hello gang, it's been a while since i have been able to read any mail from
the
group. That virus that was sent locked my e-mail up something fierce.
It's good to back in the loop.
So, while I was gone, I apperently made a huge mistake in thinking I could
easilly get rid of the pestering little oil pan drip.
How dare me.
Could somebody please give me the inside scoop, the defenitive, fail-safe
method of installing the oil pan.
With emphasis on the cork seals (which are now called something entirely
different in my house)!
At this point, I wouldn't mind having the little drip back...i kind of miss
it.

Thanks a bunch,
Mike McMahon
