Dan,
And the early Jensen Healey's used the Rootes transmission (although the parts
suppliers for JH's call it a "Talbot" transmission).

Ok, I have some questions about the use of POR-15.
Background:
I'm in the process of doing a rotisserie restoration on a '74 Jensen Healey.
I
have removed most
of the undercoating and hand sanded all the paint on the top side down to
bare
metal. The floors
have lots of pitting from rust and some holes none bigger than a quarter with
the exception of one
area under the rear seat brace on the passenger side (Right side). I removed
both rear seat
braces and plan to cut back the rusted floor panel until I find good metal
and
weld in a new section
of metal. I will be replacing the floor braces at the same time along with
reconstructing the inner
sills to strengthen them and installing new seat braces. All metal work will
be heavier grade for
improved strength. I have removed my rusted out battery tray and am now in
the
process of removing
the fenders in order to check behind them for any more rust damage and to
clean back there as well.
I plan to remove the end caps on the outer sills so I can clean inside the
sills and coat the inside
with POR-15 for better rust protection. Also plan to coat the inside of the
fenders with POR15 and as
many hidden sections as I can get too. Now for my Questions.
1. Do I need to remove all the paint before applying POR-15?
I know I need to remove the heavy rust but what about all the paint?
I'm almost finished
removing the undercoating and have removed all the heavy scale from
the
rust. Have hand
sanded all the paint on top down to bare metal. But what about all the
paint under the car, in
the engine compartment, trunk, and the interior? Does this have to
come
off down to bare
metal or can I just sand it and use it as a base? If I don't take
everything down to bare metal
will the POR-15 still work the way it is designed to work?
2. What products should I order from POR-15, and what should I get
locally?
I'm looking at purchasing their Floor and Trunk repair kit to get
started. Should I order any other
products from them at the same time? I was looking at the Metal Prep,
Marine Clean, Epoxy Putty,
and getting some additional POR-15 silver and black to get behind the
fenders and do the inside
of the sills and any other areas I think need better protection. Once
I
coat all the underside of the
car I would like to paint the entire car one color top to bottom just
like the factory did. Should I use
the POR-15 primer or will any primer I can purchase locally work just
as well?
3. How much of each item do I need? I have never done this much before so
I'm not familiar with the
quantities of each item I will need.
Sorry to trouble the Alpine and Tiger list with my Jensen project but I know
a
lot of people between the
three lists who have used the POR-15 products before. When I ask on just one
list I don't get a lot of
comments but between the three I get quite a few. BTW, both the Jensen and
the
Tiger were built by
the same company so there is a link. OK, maybe I am stretching it but I still
love both car makers.
