I've never used the clutch while engaging or disengaging the OD in my
Alpine. However, I do let up on the accelerator pedal whilst engaging, and
give it just a touch more Welly when disengaging (the better to match the
engine rpm).

The technical question is from whence does the oil pump in the OD get it's
drive? As long as the loss of input shaft speed doesn't affect the oil
pressure required to engage, it should work either way.

Personally, I think Laycock figured that the impact of using the clutch was
potentially more damaging than not using it. But, then again, they also
probably didn't imagine using it in hard accelleration - that's not what it
was designed for.

Oh, and if anyone is interested, there IS a source for J-type OD trannys for
Rootes motors.  Commer vans ............
