Thanks for the thoughts so far....here are my comments

Distributor cap......I still have a whacking great spark at the leads
even when the engine has turned sour, so don't think that is the problem.

Compression test....I did a cold compression check after the first
couple of run arounds here, and found 155psi on each cylinder. Will
attempt a warm check after the next time I run the engine

The timing setting I used was 7 degrees BTDC, set at the front pulley
timing mark with a light....the 70 seen by some is one of the
differences between a Mac (mine) and  PC character set.

Even though I used brand new Champions, the possibility of bad plugs on
1 and 2 had not occured to me, so will look at them.
