One way of telling if you have a bad head gasket and are blowing coolant out via the cylinders is to hold a dry hand within a couple of inches of the tailpipe while the engine is running. If the head gasket has a significant leak you will often get drops of water blowing onto your palm. Not water vapor, but good sized drops. I have had this happen.
