Dan, I had mine media blasted, a little mechanical sanding, etch primed,
and 2 part epoxy primed for $1000. Another friend had his dipped for
$1000, no primer, and some coating, they said, but looked like it was
rusting when he picked it up.
Both of these prices included all of the misc. parts, and car stripped
to bare shell. Both had undercoating on bottom. The price is worth the
cost of removing all of that undercoating, if nothing else.
It really depends on the shop. Media, not sand blasting, unless they
reallllllllly bear down, will not warp the panels, and will bring it to
bare metal. You really have to work to get all of the media out of all
of the nooks and crannies, because when you paint the inside of the car,
it will blow some out, even with HVLP. Take a rubber mallet and shop
vac to it.
Dipping is nice, if done right, but if not a nightmare. Seeping dipping
solution taking the paint off later. But they are suppose to nunify the
solution as one of the last steps. You still have to prime, as it
starts to rust right away.
Sounds like a lawyers response, but check the shops out, talk to
previous customers, hopefully some one you know, not shop contact, and
bite the bullet, as nothing in restoration is perfect, as you will find out.
In retrospect, looking at both cars, I would go with media blasting
again, and spend 1/2 day myself, with rubber mallet and shop vac. It
was not that bad, but I wanted a perfect job on trunk, and we had some
media come out. Sanded, and repainted it, but area was hidden by gas
tanks, etc.
