"It's recommended to use straight non-detergent 30 weight oil in the
transmission and overdrive, right? But my question is, does anyone use
80-90 in their gearboxes with overdrives, anyway?...and does anyone have
problems with their gearboxes if they use this thicker oil?"

"The reason why I ask is, although I own an Alpine without an overdrive,
I'm
restoring a Ferrari that has a Laycock overdrive unit integrated with my
Ferrari built transmission. There has always been a conflict in the type of
oil to use in these transmissions because Ferrari recommends using 90
weight, and the Brits recommend 30wt for their overdrives. The British guys
say that the overdrive will have trouble engaging with the thicker oil,
while I'm hesitant to use thinner oil on the irreplaceable parts in my
Ferrari transmission. What to do, what to do!"

First, I remember someone mentioning that the 80-90 weight number on the
gearbox oil is a different scale than the motor oil scale, and that they
are actually pretty close.

Second, I'd hands down go with what the factory recommends: that is motor
oil or gearbox oil or what weight. Sunbeam had 30w motor oil. I of course
would have no clue what Ferrari suggests!

Third, that said, John Roseby recommends 20/50 motor oil for Alpine
tranny's. That's what I'm using.
