We owe left hand drive to Henry Ford. When the Model T came out, US cars had
both left and right hand drive. Henry decided that he would build the Model T
with left hand drive and since he built so many of them, the country
standardized on left hand drive. Remember, old Henry was building 1 million
cars per year when the TOTAL of all other manufacturers was less then 100,000.

Chuck, the story I always heard was that it comes from them riding
horses on the left hand side of a trail, so that when they came upon
another traveler, their right hand (as most people are righties) was
free to draw a gun or sword, if need be. This begs the question, why
are Americans left hand drive?? My wife, who is British, would say,
Just to be contrary! Bill
