Lloyd,
Congratulations on your series 1!! Been there, done that, got the hat and
'T' shirt!

Welcome also to the list. Lots of useful information will come your way, and
you'll learn soon enough who the "Guru's" are.

As Eric Funk said, evaluate the type of driving you will be doing. With an
overdrive you (if properly set up) should also have a 4.22 or 4.44 rear end.
If you get rid of the OD, and change to a 3.89 rear end, 4'th gear will be
about the same as the taller rear end with OD.

Regarding gearboxes, I'm using a series 3 close ratio box in my car for
racing. I also have a series 5 all synchro box. The synchro first gear is a
definite plus for street driving. Fourth gear is the same (1:1) in all
boxes. If your doing a lot of highway driving you could also reduce your top
end engine rpm by installing larger diameter tires.

To me, the swap you describe sounds like someone is trying to get a "quick
and dirty" OD. Your not going to prosper ulness your getting all synchro,
and without the OD your going to want a lower geared rear end (3.89).

Don't get in to too big a hurry. Whatever you decide upon is going to change
anyway.

Good luck!
    Carl
