        Ian and I make our own side cover and pan gaskets because we also
haven't found any cork gaskets that work. 
Eric, have you tried making gaskets using Nitrile rubber? I have used a
spongy nitrile rubber gasket material to stop the leaking valve cover
gasket on my old '82 Chevy Caprice wagon (SB V8). Everything from the
parts store was real junk (even FelPro rubber gaskets) so I made my own
from 1/4" sheet nitrile rubber and never had an oil leak. 
On those Alpine side covers, I use superweather strip adhesive to glue
the gasket to the cover.
