A few comments on this. First, I recently bought great great wires for my
911 from the place highly recommended by Porsche people:
http:/www.magnecor.com For what it's worth, there is a company called
Nology that makes "Firewire" They are univerally believed to be bad, not
just inferior, but bad wires, and expensive anyway. I had great success
with the Magnecor wires so I got them for my 356. Of course, the reason I
had problems with the 911 wires was because the resistors in the ends
popped, it was not the wires themselves.

As to size, Magnecor has 7mm, 8mm and 8.5mm wires. But note, the wire
inside the 7mm and 8mm are exactly the same! The wire in the 8.5 might be
the same too. The only difference is how thick the casing is, and thus how
much heat they can take. From what I understand, a standard engine, and
even a moderately tuned one will be fine with the 7mm. Check out their
site. They have a Myths section. So, size doesn't really matter.

Another thing, last night, I pulled off my distributor cap and found that
the little button that connects with the rotor had fallen off. All that
was behind the button was a thin gauge spring. Seems kind of ironic to
seek out larger wires when before you even get to the wires, the spring is
very thin.
