The fact that the solenoid is getting hot indicates resistance near the
solenoid - guaranteed to make things hot when the power flows. Clean the
cable connections well at the solenoid - bright, shiny metal on all pieces -
cable ends, studs, nuts and washers. Look for any signs of corrosion under
the insulation on the cables. Also, make sure the hole in the cable isn't
too big for the stud on the solenoid - I've seen many cables used that when
tightened down, the nut and washer only make contact on part of the cable
end because the hole is so big. Battery terminal coating makes a good
protectant after it's all assembled.
If there was a ground problem, I wouldn't expect the solenoid to get hot,
but just in case, check to see if the clutch pipe gets warm - it's the only
other solid metal connection from the engine to the frame. (provided the
rubber bushings are intact on the throttle linkage!)
