Starters

I remember a while back that someone purchased a starter for their car and it
would not work because, although it was British and a direct bolt-on, the
teeth that engaged the ring gear was different, or something of that nature. I
need to buy a starter, and would like to buy it from my imports guy here in
town, but I just want to make sure it works. Any help is appreciated. Lou
