Recently I read somewhere that the black oxide that is available for home
use relies on oil for a major portion of its rust prevention qualities.
Seems the black oxide acts as a micrscopic oil sponge. Were the parts
lightly oiled after treatment?

Just from sitting around, really. I haven't been drving the car much,
and hardly at all over the winter. I live in SoCal, very dry, not near
coast.
