Hi:

For those of you not in California please disregard:

A couple of weeks back Jay Laifman brought to our attention that the
California Air Resources Board (CARB) was pushing for a repeal of the
rolling exemption for cars 30 years or older and expressed concern that
the exemptions currently enjoyed by pre-'65 cars could possibly be
threatened as well. I cribbed pretty heavily from his letter when I
wrote my legislator (thanks for the info on "how to find your
legislator", by the way) and got this in reply:

"According to CARB there has NEVER been a plan to repeal the portion of
SB42 that exempts cars 1966-1973 from smog checks. In July of 2000, the
Air Resources Board did recommend that cars that reach their 30th
birthday after 2003 be subject to CONTNUED smog inspections. That
recommendation has never been introduced into the legislature."
(legislators emphasis, not mine:-))

This seems to mean that not only are the 66-73 cars safe from smog
checks (time to get that 240Z and swap a chevy V-8 into it), but it
would seem that the rolling exemptions will, at this time, continue
after 2003.

Jay, since I don't read the newspaper or keep up with current events, I
really appreciate your keeping tabs on this stuff and letting us know
about it. I hope you'll keep doing so.

Thanks again.
