I'm going out on a limb on this, but I think this is one that I need to
look into a bit more. My instinct, based on what I've seen on cars I've
dismantled, tells me that the early cars used Moonstone (code 19) on the
steel wheels starting with the later Series II's somewhere just before
B9107291. Cars earlier than that had steel wheel that were painted the
same color as the body of the car. Moonstone was the only white
available on the Alpine until late Series IV when they introduced Artic
white (code 92).
Now, it makes since to me that they would have used the colors that were
available to them at the time. Why would they create a special white
just for the steel wheels? Just use what's available...right? So with
that in mind, I would think that early car would have (code 19)
Moonstone wheels and cars starting with the later Series IV's went to
(code 92) Artic white. I won't be able to confirm this until I can get
my hands on some good wheels with original paint on them. I'll get Jan
to test the paint and see if it matches the colors we've already had
mixed. We have a Series V in original unrestored condition right now, so
we can test the color of those wheels, but the early stuff will have to
wait until I can find a sample.
my 2 cents,
Ian
