I fear that unfortunately you are right, the early Alpines do look too
"proper", kind of like somebody's elderly aunt dressed up for a party-not sexy
and racy like the contemporary Austin Healey 100 or Triumph TR-2. In fact the
car that the Sunbeam Talbot 10 (and prior Talbot 10) and Sunbeam Talbot 80-90
were derived from was the Hillman Aero-Minx which was described in the Britsh
Motoring Press of the mid-thirties as a "Hillman Minx in a party frock".
Interestingly, back in the late twenties before Rootes took over Hillman, Capt
John Black (later Sir John Black-the head of Triumph when the TR series was
developed) had a "sports" Hillman developed to compete with the MG- it was
called the Hillman Husky!!!! Obviously not a successful car-I doubt any even
survive.

Ian,
Because they were the original Alpines (MK I and III) that came
before the Series Alpines and they really do look "proper". <smile>
