Well Jim! You may have just solved one of the great mysteries of this
car! When i bought it about 18 months ago, it had no battery cover. I
always wondered what could have become of it, but as I've had old
English cars for many years, I guessed it had been "salvaged" by
someone who needed it more. Now I can see how it could have lterally
melted. The child's car seat doesn't really sit on the cover, more
around the cover, but suffice to say there is now a small piece of
quarter inch plywood on top of the battery.
Thanks for the warning about this potentially very dangerous
situation!

Did you put something as an insulator on top of the positive
battery
terminal so if the lid is pushed downward it does not ground the
battery? I
have seen several Alpines over the years that have had a "meltdown"...
