In cases like this, do you think people simply sign up for any list they run
across in order to send their spam? Basically a non-list person taking
advantage of our list.

The person who posted this message is indeed a member of the Alpines
list. That is why the message got through. The first line of spam
defense for the list is the myriad array of filters that MJB has
installed on the server (HTML, binaries, etc.). Our 2nd line of
defense is that only list members can post. The Boy Scouts message
obviously met both these criteria, so the list processing software
allowed the message to go through.
Essentially we all depend on each other's good graces to keep the
Alpines list civil. Any list member can post pretty much anything
they want. Our own self-restraint prevents each of us from doing so.
While the discussion on the Alpines list occasionally strays to
non-Sunbeam stuff (e.g. Aztek, Rover V-8), it's usually related to
automobiles in one way or another. Let's please keep it that way.
There are more draconian measures that can be taken to keep the list
on topic. Believe me, you don't want me to implement them. I think
doing so would kill the list, and someone else would just go start
another Alpines list on egroups.com or whatever. Plus, it would mean
a lot more work for me, so you can rest assured that I don't want me
to implement them, either!
