Robert, Sometimes that will happen with a battery. 5 years is a good life for batteries. When batteries charge they have a chemical reaction and fumes can be made. These fumes are mainly hydrogen & some sulfuric. Sulfuric is what causes the corrosion on the terminals. Hydrogen is very explosive. That is why on the battery tops they usually say no sparks, open flames and don't smoke near batteries. You probably had an internal spark caused by a poor conection. Glad you were'nt under the hood!
