I talked to someone who installed a 5-speed into an early
Alpine. He said it worked very well, and that there were
apparently two different suppliers for the conversion kit.
One supplier was in Australia, the other in New Zealand,
and one kit was more complete than the other (but of course
I don't remember which). Perhaps someone on the list has
further info?
