Mike,
My guess would be an intake manifold gasket leak or a vacuum hose leak
creating a lean mixture in a cylinder or two. Applying the choke would
enrich the mixture and compensate for the lean condition. An air leak can
be confirmed by using an unlit propane torch as described in recent list
traffic.
