[6pack] ring gear vs starter motor text clarified

when I try to start it (72 tr6 triple carb etc) I get a high pitched grinding
sound.

the problem began last weekend and a couple of times I was able to manually
turn the engine and then I could start it.  that doesn't work any more.

should I try swapping out the starter or is it the ring gear?
