Agreed on all counts and that sums up my situation too. I paid around $300 for
a pair on eBay a few years ago and they had new covers on them. A refurb kit
for the standard seats is approaching $1000 for the pair. I fully intend to
refurb my original seats and I have since bought the kits when they were on
sale but I will have to sell the concept of installing them to my wife who
loves the Miata seats
The one downside, they don't quite look right in my opinion although they are
consistent with the early TR6 seats minus the foldability of the headrest.
Adding a black rollbar helped with the appearance as it added a bit more
infrastructure so the seats are less prominent.
Overall the fabric covers and the additional side and back support make them
more comfortable than the standard vinyl seats and once upgraded, the speakers
in the headrests deliver audio that you can hear even at speed since you have
two speakers in each headrest inches from your ears. You do need to get the
right Miata seats because at some point Mazda fixed the audio issues that made
them put tweeters in the headrests and the later model seats don't have them.

In my case, the Miata seats were way less expensive than replacing the dried
up foam in my stock seats. Plus mine are cloth inserts, which I feel are much
more comfortable than the vinyl stock seats. Finally, mine have the speakers
in the headrests.
