Michael---Your mechanic is correct in that the MSD will reduce plug
fouling. Having used the MSD for about 17 years (my second one now)
the plugs also give long life of 50,000+ miles. Even when running the
colder plugs.
The down side is the initial cost, (off sale at about $200,) as one can
buy a lot of sparkplugs for what these units cost. Installation is
relatively simple. If fouling is a problem tho, this is a good solution.
MSD recommends better plug wires to keep from frying the stock ones, so
this is another cost. I use "Taylor" wires (naturally), available at
many high performance stores, or available online by going to their web
site. Figure around $70 for a set. They come in different colors.
