You are correct that a past lister berated billeted crank products and their
purveyors with the all-inclusive phrase "Just another dumb billet part brought
to you by an idiot on eBay." Never mind that this broad sweep of phrase casts
an all inclusive net. While I have a real problem with the style of this past
poster's response , his basic message was correct. Solid pulleys may look nice
but they can be dangerous to your crank's health. So I'm really surprised at
Moss on this issue.

But, to the point, the root cause of the confusion is the lack of
understanding of the physics, which Vance discusses.

Note that this confusion extends to the use of "power pulleys" on other makes
of cars.

Fortunately, doing a Google search on "harmonic dampers" AND "crankshafts"
yields a number of
excellent links, including these (I apologize for posting this again) :

http://zhome.com/ZCMnL/tech/harmonics.htm - Scroll down to the end to see a
great explanation on the physics of the damper itself by "ZORO"
http://www.toyotacelicaonline.com/pulleys.htm - Look at the diagram on the
amplitude of torsional distortions away from the flywheel.
http://www.pro-race.com/faq.htm - More info

I do point out that a modest approach for a street machine is to buy a rebuilt
stock pulley/dampener for substantially less than several hundred dollars. My
suspicion is that it will suffice quite nicely after
recalibrating/reconfirming the timing marks.

On the issue of getting the most out of an existing engine (a complicated
aesthetic, hormonal, and economic issue) , I agree with other posters that
much can be achieved by much more modest modifications to the production
engine as an alternative to strapping on a supercharger. While still a
neophyte on increasing engine performance, I again agree with most that a
supercharger is one of the least attractive alternatives. One only need read
Kastner to appreciate this point.

Am I correct that the Moss SC kit replaces the damped crankshaft pulley with
a
non damped pulley and if that is true, how do people feel about that ?. I
recall they guy selling the billet crank pulleys on eBay got an earful at
one
time due to the liability of eliminating the crank damping on the TR6 motor.
