Thanks to everyone who responded yesterday. Turns out the gas wasn't
coming through the screws on the fuel pump. What I didn't remember
until I had the sucker back off the car was that there are air holes
on the bottom side of the fuel pump (I assume to allow air to enter
and exit when the diaphragm is moving). My guess is that gas was
leaking past the diaphragm and through those holes. Also turns out I
had gas in the sump, so I changed the oil and filter.

The holes on the diaphragm looked fine, so the only thing I can figure
was that I didn't have the screws down tight enough.

I unscrewed the two halves and then put it back together again, this
time making sure I had the screws on as tight as I could humanly get
them. The only problem is that from screwing and unscrewing the brass
nuts that connects the solid fuel line to the fuel pump, the brass nut
has gotten chewed up. Is that difficult to replace?

Of course, all of this makes me think about just chucking the old
system and converting to an electric pump.
