Thanks for the follow up emails. Here's the scoop.
If you buy the headlamp kit from Moss you get all of the parts you need
including a spring clip ( aka a forked prong :-)) and the instructions on how
to fit the clip to the bucket.
If you buy individual parts (as I did, it was an incremental project..) you
need to be sure to order the spring clip (Moss part 156-020) with the bucket
(144-807) as they are sold separately and also ask for the instructions for
the spring clip conversion if you are unsure how this all fits together. I
just did what seemed natural and it went together just fine.
Other problems during this project:
1. The new parts don't seem to work well together. In particular the new light
units are loose even when the outer trim is tight against the inner bucket.
2. The new gaskets between the bucket and the fender no longer have the molded
rubber "tubes" for the adjusters to go into. They are just flat gaskets. I
re-used my old gaskets.
3. It is unclear (to me) how to get to the rear of the bucket to attach the
spiral nut to the screw that is high up on the inside between the inner fender
and the bucket. My first thought was that you really need to install new
buckets with the fenders off but if you do that you cant easily attach the
fender to the tub so I'm not sure how this goes together. The other two screws
are pretty accessible.

Subject: [6pack] Headlamp buckets and rims
I'm accumulating parts to refresh my headlight assemblies. The existing ones
are rusting and the aiming adjusters seems to have deteriorated. In general I
don't like this design because there is some sideways force generated by the
spring that attaches the inner bucket to the outer bucket that seems to cause
the adjusters to tilt so I wonder how you can ever keep these things aimed
right, but I digress..
My real question is about the attachment of the rims to the buckets. My old
buckets had a forked prong at the bottom that allowed a tab in the chromed
outer ring to snap into it (on a good day that is). My new buckets (from
Moss)
have a threaded hole at the bottom so that clearly isn't going to work with
the tab on the rim. Are there different rims that have to match specific
buckets or is there an additional part needed for the buckets to work with
the
tabbed trim rings ?
