I've just pulled the flywheel off of my TR6 as part of
my HVDA 5-speed conversion. I can see two areas of
the ring gear (about 10 teeth each) where the teeth
are worn down some (20%). I suspect that this
condition is due to a bad starter that I previously
had which sometimes wouldn't catch right away and
would grind every now and then. That went on for a
few years. I've now got a high-torque starter and
it's been great and hasn't given me any problems.
Two questions please:
- Is this ring thing a problem in any way?
- While I've got the flywheel off, is there any
advantage to getting it lightened? I've heard some of
the pros and cons to this. Note that my engine is
basically stock with 98K on it, has all the get up and
go I need, and may end up getting a rebuild anyway in
2-3 years.
Thanks,
Joe
