I made a trunnion oiler for about $11. I bought a Plews 50-509CC 6 oz. pistol
oiler, which has a screw-on nozzle/oil delivery arm. Unscrewing that, I
bought an adapter between the threads for that and the threads of grease gun
extension (rubber hose type) and added the zerk fitting nozzle.

I haven't used it yet, but it should work. If anyone's done something similar
or sees a problem, please let me know.

I've heard 2 serious arguments against using grease (besides the old "that's
what they're designed for" standard). Grease may not fully occupy the whole
void inside the trunion given it's design, and the brass trunion is designed
to wear slightly with use and the brass bits will remain suspended in the
grease but sink in the oil. I've also heard that some repro trunnions don't
hold oil well, and that moly grease is a good substitute.

As regards the Mercury oiler, I found this online: "You just buy a nice
little thing from the Mercury Marine company:
It's a special "grease" gun intended for high pressure pumping of
OIL into grease nipples! Part No 91-372 99A 1 and sold under the
Mercury/Quicksilver brand." I think that's the part number you wanted.

Somebody please let me know if any of this is bad information.

=========================================

Listers:

In the past, I have asked for advice in getting a trunnion oiler device.
Usually, someone recommends purchasing an oil gun from Mercury Marine. I
have
called several Mercury Marine dealers, but no one seems to know what I want
or to have much interest in discussing this with me. Therefore:

1. Does anyone have a part number for a Mercury Marine oil gun?
2. If not, is there another source?

Thanks. I have been driving my 6 quite a bit lately, and it is time to get
the chassis lubricated.
