I have a 1976 TR6 with j-type overdrive. Recently had the clutch replaced
(Laycock) and the gearbox was overhauled, replaced bearings, layshaft and
synchros; gears were reported to be fine. I now have a new issue which only
occurs after the car has been driven for about 15 minutes. The first
indicator is a slight grind when shifting into 3rd gear and then when you
let off the gas and cruise in 3rd it slips out of gear and will only go into
4th then things are fine until the cycle repeats itself a few minutes later.
The work was done by the only reputable service garage for MG/TRs in my area
but they are reluctant to accept responsibility and have only suggested
trying synthetic gear oil, so far.
