Cary:
Sounds like your block is going to need cam bearings, but at
least it is fixable and you will end up with the motor better than new.
As for getting the cam out, I can suggest you try gently
levering the cam out. Place a small block of wood on the front of the
block, and use a pry bar of some sort (perhaps a small crow bar?) to
lever against the cam journal to extract the cam. Since the cam is toast
anyway, I would not worry about dinging a journal or a lobe.
Another approach would be to cut the cam in two. To do this will
require removing the engine, which will be required in any event.
Disassemble the bottom end to remove the crank, rods, pistons, etc. As I
recall this will give you access to the cam, and you can use a Dremel or
torch to cut the cam in two and extract the front portion through the
front, and that back portion through the back of the block.
HOWEVER, I would think that since you are going to be taking the
block to the machine shop anyway, that you proceed with your teardown
and leave the cam in the block. Better to let the machinist remove it
for you. If you accidentally damage a journal or some other machined
surface, you may turn your block into scrap.
If it costs more than $150 to do the repair, you should probably
check into another block. They are plentiful and cheap.

Well, it appears as though the problem is with the second to last
journal
surface. The cam journal is so chewed up that you can barely see the
remnants of what used to be the oil supply groove. I believe the last
journal is hanging up on this surface as I am trying to remove the cam.
Does anyone have any ideas on how to remove the cam. Will using a BFH
make
the situation worse. Thanks for the help....
